- Formation and procurement still face closing conditions.
What changed
Space42 and Viasat signed a binding agreement to establish Equatys, advancing their previously announced satellite venture. Each would initially contribute $400 million upon formation; another $200 million from Space42 is expected in a later funding round. The proposed platform would serve direct-to-device and advanced mobile satellite services.
Why it matters
Shared satellites and ground facilities could give participating operators an alternative to funding separate systems. The proposed arrangement preserves their customer relationships and spectrum rights. Its practical value will depend on whether shared capacity meets operators’ coverage and service requirements.
What remains unproven
Formation and procurement remain conditional, including regulatory approvals and Viasat’s appointment as technology prime contractor. This is a financing and development milestone. It does not establish delivered satellite capacity or commercially available mobile coverage.
