What changed
Syria’s communications ministry announced an agreement involving Syrian Telecom, Cyta and UNIFI Communications for the Ebla submarine cable, state news agency SANA reported. The planned Tartous–Cyprus connection has 24 fiber pairs and initial capacity of 31 terabits per second. Service entry is targeted for early 2028.
Why it matters
The project would renew a direct international route and provide access through Cyta to wider networks. Its practical value depends on distributing that capacity inland, making the ministry’s proposed integration with national fiber infrastructure consequential for users beyond the landing station.
What remains unproven
The ministry makes the schedule conditional on licensing, marine conditions and installation vessels. Capacity expansion to 370 Tbps is a design possibility. The announcement does not demonstrate completed construction, operational capacity or lower prices for subscribers.
