Thales Alenia Space says Nigeria’s state-owned NIGCOMSAT has contracted it to develop NigComSat-2A, a geostationary communications satellite. The spacecraft will use the Spacebus B2 platform, with a planned service life exceeding 15 years. Its intended coverage extends from West and Central Africa to Southern Africa.
Why it matters
The procurement provides a defined project for expanding satellite communications capacity. For operators serving places where terrestrial networks are difficult to build, that could eventually create additional wholesale connectivity options. Broadcasting and internet access are both identified uses.
What remains unproven
The release gives no launch date, contract price or quantified broadband capacity. Coverage, service life and improved access remain project expectations.
