What changed

Google's September 14 Compute Engine release notes introduce a preview option for creating regional disks from custom and public operating-system images. The scope explicitly includes Hyperdisk Balanced High Availability volumes. The announcement concerns how disks are initialized, giving teams another route from a selected image to regional storage.

Why it matters

For operators who standardize machine configuration around approved images, this could make regional-disk provisioning fit more naturally into that workflow. The useful change is reuse of the chosen image when creating the storage resource.

What remains unproven

The feature remains in preview. The short announcement supplies no deployment-time comparison, cost reduction or application recovery result. Creating a disk from an image should not be treated as proof that an entire workload can recover automatically after a failure.
