THE ESSENTIALS
  • Support requires a qualifying PostgreSQL maintenance release.

What changed

Google's September 14 release bulletin adds pg_textsearch support to Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL. The extension uses BM25 to rank full-text search results and requires PostgreSQL 17 or later on release R20260712.01_06 or newer. Its setup guide describes enabling a database flag, installing the extension and creating a BM25 index.

Why it matters

For applications already storing searchable documents in PostgreSQL, this provides another search option within the managed database. It could reduce the need to operate a separate search service for workloads whose requirements fit the extension.

What remains unproven

Google's relevance claims are not independent benchmarks. Teams still need to evaluate their own queries and database load. The product-specific release-note page retrieved during research lagged the aggregate bulletin; the linked setup documentation corroborates the capability.
