- Public preview; text, image and document inputs.
What changed
Snowflake has put multimodal AI_SUMMARIZE into public preview. The Cortex function can summarize text, images and documents, including diagrams and reports, directly inside Snowflake. The company says it identifies themes and relationships without customers choosing a model or writing custom prompts.
Why it matters
For data teams, the practical attraction is a shorter route from stored files to searchable summaries. Applying the function to file references in a table could support reviewing a document collection without constructing a separate processing workflow for each file.
What remains unproven
The release note supplies no accuracy results, pricing comparison or evidence about omissions in difficult documents. Public preview also leaves the capability short of general availability. Summaries should therefore be checked against source material before they inform consequential decisions.
