THE ESSENTIALS
  • Manual updates remain possible after a potentially incorrect permission check.

What changed

JetBrains lists Toolbox App 3.8 as released September 14. Its announcement says macOS sometimes incorrectly marked IDE installation directories as unwritable, causing updates to be disabled unnecessarily. The new version keeps manual updates available and displays remedial instructions if macOS actually blocks installation. It also restores list navigation and Windows shortcuts for switching between tools and projects.

Why it matters

The update addresses a practical obstacle to maintaining development environments: a preliminary permission check could prevent an otherwise valid update. Cleanup now shows progress and disables deletion controls until rescanning finishes, helping users avoid submitting the same operation twice.

What remains unproven

JetBrains gives no incidence figures or installation-success measurements. Keeping the update available does not bypass an actual operating-system permission restriction.
