What changed
STMicroelectronics introduced its SafeSense VD56GA automotive image sensor and said samples are available now. The 1.1-megapixel component targets infrared driver and occupant monitoring. Its 3.7-by-3.2-millimetre package includes functions such as automatic exposure, cropping and dark calibration, with RAW and YUV output options.
Why it matters
Combining those functions could reduce the external processing required in a camera module. ST says the design can also accommodate cheaper optics and simpler infrared illumination. That makes system integration a relevant consideration alongside resolution when suppliers evaluate the component for different vehicle platforms.
What remains unproven
ST's claimed improvements in sharpness and infrared sensitivity are comparisons with its previous generation, not independent vehicle tests. The release provides neither public pricing nor a mass-production schedule. Sample availability does not establish adoption in customer vehicles.
