What changed
University of Stuttgart researchers used a laser sensor and a test bench to measure vibrations in intact synchronous belts and belts with artificial tooth or cord damage. Across 144 experiments, they evaluated a damage indicator built from frequency harmonics. Torque influenced the indicator more strongly than the other operating conditions tested.
Why it matters
Our assessment is that the finding matters for interpreting monitoring data: a changed signal may reflect operating load as well as damage. Comparing readings under appropriately matched conditions could therefore be more informative than applying a single threshold across every operating state.
What remains unproven
Only one belt type and deliberately introduced defects were investigated. The authors say transfer to other belt arrangements and naturally occurring damage requires validation. The study does not deliver a universal failure-warning system.
