The initiative
The World Bank describes LAC Digital Citizen as an initiative to develop an open-source digital identity broker for Latin America and the Caribbean. RedGeALC coordinates the work, with funding from Co-Develop, the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank.
The intended outcome
The aim is mutual recognition of electronic identities so people and businesses can use national digital IDs to access public services in participating countries.
Important distinction
This is an initiative’s stated goal, not evidence that every country or public service already accepts cross-border digital identity. The source brief is dated 5 January 2026 and is shown here as background coverage.
